PBA games in Dubai for next five seasons, says Salud

MANILA—The Philippine Basketball Association, in line with its commitment to give something back to its fans, will play at least one game in Dubai each year for the next five seasons.
This was a promise made by commissioner Chito Salud to a huge assembly of overseas Filipino workers as he stressed that the PBA is in that oil-rich emirate not to make money.

Jollibee eyes 90 stores in China

MANILA, Philippines - Jollibee Foods Corp., the country's top restaurant chain, said Wednesday it planned to set up 280 new stores this year, including 90 in China, as part of a major expansion drive.

DSWD says its 'unfair' to say govt isn't helping Mindanao flood victims

Yet another Philippine government website was found vulnerable to hackers, with a hacker posting the flaw online Wednesday night.

The hacker, identified only as "No.One," said the site of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) shares the same "host" as Microsoft.com but is vulnerable.

Philippines' Aquino halts graft-tainted projects

Facebook threw cold water on Tuesday on a report that it had lost users in the United States over the past month.

Officials: Barako could lose PBA membership

MANILA—Top officials of the PBA will decide immediately whether financially troubled franchise Barako Bull will continue to keep its membership to the pro league.
Commissioner Chito Salud had already warned Barako Bull that unless the team reactivates in time for the opening of the 2011-12 season on Sept. 25, the franchise would lose its membership.
Chair Rene Pardo, however, said the matter was more urgent.
“I don’t think will wait for the new season will in June,” Pardo said.

MANILA—Marcus Douthit capped an explosive outing with a slam dunk as Smart Gilas Pilipinas turned back Al Jala’a of Syria, 85-80, last night to reach the semifinals of the Fiba Asia Champions Cup for the first time in three years.

Phivolcs allays tsunami fears from Japan quake

State seismologists allayed fears of a destructive tsunami reaching the Philippines after a powerful quake rocked Japan Friday morning.
 




But the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it will continue to monitor the aftermath of Friday's quake.
"Right now, our data shows the quake was not capable of generating a destructive tsunami that can reach the Philippines," Phivolcs seismology department OIC Ishmael Narag said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Narag said the quake occurred at 8:05 a.m. Friday, Manila time.

Lopez company brings solar power to homes

Lopez-led First Philec Solar Solutions (FPSS) is bringing solar power generation to homes and commercial establishments with the launch of scalable solar technology kits.

In a briefing on the sidelines of the Philippine Solar Photovoltaic Summit on Thursday, FPSS project manager Derrick John Tolentino said a typical kit could displace 4-5 kilowatts (kW) of electricity a day by converting solar power into electrical energy.

Based on rough computations, this means savings of around 15 percent on monthly power bills, he said.
